Japan Society of Boston Meets Sarah Yasuda (Tokyo, 2015-2017)

In partnership with Japan Society of Boston, USJETAA is proud to share the JSB Meets JET Alumni interview series which explores the JET experience across Japan.

In October of 2024, Japan Society of Boston got to know Sarah Yasuda (Tokyo, 2015-2017).

What sparked your interest in applying for the JET program?

I am a second generation Japanese Korean American, and I grew up visiting my relatives in Aichi prefecture over the summer and winter breaks. I'd always wanted to live in Japan and see what it would be like to live there on my own. There was also a sense of connecting with my heritage and getting to experience the place where my mother grew up. The JET program was a perfect opportunity to gain teaching experience and enjoy everyday life there.

How has your connection in relation to Japan changed since living in Japan?

My connection to Japan has definitely strengthened since living in Japan. I still keep in touch with coworkers and students. One student even stayed with my family during their trip to California, where I am originally from. Living in Tokyo was also my first time living and working on my own post-college. I will always have fond memories of my time on JET.
