Photo of the Month: July 2024

Our July 2024 Photo of the Month comes from current JET Taylor Hamada (Kyoto, 2019-present) who took on an important role facilitating a sister-city exchange between Delray Beach, Florida and Miyazu-shi in Kyoto.

Since 1977, Miyazu and Delray Beach have shared a sister city relationship that celebrates cultural exchange and historical ties. This connection originated in the early 20th century when Japanese farmers, including George Sukeji Morikami from Miyazu, established Delray Beach's "Yamato Colony." Morikami's land donation later became The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, a tribute to this heritage.

Recently, six high school students from Delray Beach visited Miyazu, marking the first exchange trip in six years due to the pandemic. They experienced Japanese family life, engaged with local groups, and attended school, reinforcing the bond between our communities. This visit underscores the lasting importance of international friendship, cultural exchange, and community.

This photo commemorates the recent goodbye party, where residents from Miyazu-shi enjoyed a last meal with friends from Delray Beach.
