After last year's success, JETAA Portland, JETAABC, and PNWJETAA are excited to present a second Bento Workshop with Amanda Oumiya from K&L Bentos!
This time the theme is kyara-ben! (For those who don’t know, kyara-ben is short for 'character bento', the art of making cute, detailed box lunches that look like popular characters.)
While this may sound daunting at first, Amanda is here to show everyone some simple tips and tricks to make your next bento that much cuter. Perhaps it will even give you the confidence to compete in the upcoming JETAA Kyaraben contest! (**Save the date: July 11 at 11am. More details to come!**)

June 8, 2021 from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm Eastern Time - USJETAA Japanese Reading Group 

The goal of the USJETAA Japanese Reading Group is to help advanced beginner and intermediate level students improve their reading skills. Each month we will look at a short reading from Aozora Bunko, a repository of public domain literature. Participants should attempt to do the reading on their own and come to the meeting with any questions. We will spend the meeting each month reading the assignment sentence by sentence to understand how the Japanese is working. This event will be on the second Tuesday each month, from 7:00-8:30 pm Eastern Time and is facilitated by Daniel Morales of How to Japanese. Sessions are not recorded.

We will meet in Central Park near The Mall and Literary Walk. Here are the coordinates (40°46'16.0"N 73°58'15.6"W) and please refer to the picture for a rough location.
While planning this event, we took into consideration the following:
1. Choosing a less popular location where we are able to hang out without feeling overwhelmed with crowds
2. Close to restrooms
3. Close to subway stations
A friendly reminder that Central Park prohibits the use of smoking and consuming alcohol.
We have a rain date set for the following day, Sunday, June 13th from 11 am to 2 pm EDT. If it's looking like it'll rain on Sunday too, the event will be canceled.

Take the 7 Train to Main Street Flushing, then transfer to the NORTHBOUND #25 bus (the stop is on Main just south of Roosevelt Ave., east side by the Duane Reade), which will drop you by the park at its last stop. Meet at the playground where Coastal Preservation Network will be setting up.Details: Sarah Auffret was a Tokushima JET who went on to contribute to the effort to clear plastic waste from the world’s oceans, especially in the arctic. She was lost in the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines crash while on her way to a UN conference in Nairobi. Coastal Preservation Network will be hosting the cleanup and will provide gloves, bags, and tools. We will be cleaning up the shoreline, so sturdy shoes or boots are recommended. Join us for a casual film discussion with JET alumni (and FOJs) from all over!
We will separately watch the film and meet to discuss it over Zoom. This works like a book club, rather than a watch party.
For May, we'll watch and discuss the French New Wave classic "Hiroshima mon amour" (1959). Directed by French film director Alain Resnais, this was a co-production between Japan and France.
"Hiroshima mon amour" is streaming on Criterion, and is available to rent on Amazon, Google Play, YouTube, Vudu, and Apple ($2.99 - $3.99).
After registering for the event, you will receive a confirmation email. Click the "Go to online event page" button in the email to access the Zoom meeting on the day of the event. If you have not created an Eventbrite account before, you will be prompted to do so before you can view the event page. The Zoom link will become active 5 minutes before the event starts. You will be able to join the meeting when you see the "Join Now" button on the event page.

Come join us on Tuesday, June 22 for a Netflix watch party and Zoom hangout as we watch "Little Miss Sumo" together. This award winning documentary is about Hiyori Kon, an amateur sumo wrestler working to change the rules preventing women from competing professionally in the sport.

Join us for another casual virtual crafting night. This is a great way to set aside some time to finish a project you started and have not finished. Past participants have worked on home repairs, embroidery, knitting, sound recording, card-making, baking, gardening, photo albums, and more.

June 26 at 11 AM PT - JETAA Portland Ikebana Demonstration and Workshop with Nana Goto Bellerud
Introducing the masterful Nana Goto-Bellerud. Nana has been studying at the Sogetsu School of ikebana since 2005. She has held exhibitions and demonstrations of ikebana at the Portland Art Museum, the Portland Japanese Garden, and Leach Botanical Garden. Through her demonstrations and workshops, she seeks to introduce others to the art of ikebana and to inspire more to study the art. Beyond simply producing a beautiful work of art with flowers and natural objects, she shows her audience how ikebana explores artistic concepts such as balance, contrast, and negative space. Nana currently serves as Branch Director of Sogetsu Portland and was formerly the President of Ikebana International Portland Chapter #47.
