Program Leaders – 2020 High School Summer Abroad Program (Kyoto or Tokyo, Japan)

**Program Leaders Needed for Japanese Language and Culture Program for our 2020 High School Summer Abroad Program in Kyoto***

***Program Leaders Needed for Japanese Pop Culture: Anime, Manga, and Gaming Program for our 2020 High School Summer Abroad Program in Tokyo***

CIEE – the largest study abroad nonprofit organization – is recruiting experienced teachers to lead high school students on their summer abroad experiences. CIEE Global Navigator programs last 3 to 4 weeks and run twice between 6/14 and 8/8. The study abroad programs take students to more than 50 global destinations to focus on language learning (French, Spanish, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, and Arabic), service projects, or passion topics such as visual arts, marine science or international relations. We are seeking Japanese Language Teachers to lead our Japanese Language and Culture Program in Kyoto, Japan. This paid opportunity is a unique chance to get professional development and international experience during the summer. Benefit from training in intercultural learning, group management overseas, and language/subject immersion—all while networking with like-minded peers.

Session 1 Dates: June 13 – July 10, 2020

Session 2 Dates: July 11 – August 7, 2020

Program Location: Kyoto, Japan or Tokyo, Japan

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support our participants 24/7 for the duration of the program by counseling them on homesickness and culture shock, facilitating thoughtful discussion and reflection about their experience, sharing your enthusiasm for the local language/culture/program subject, and supervising and participating alongside them during activities and excursions.

  • Meet participants and parents at gateway airports and chaperone the group flight to and from the program location. Provide participant support in the case of flight delays and cancellations, as required by CIEE.

  • Cultivate a positive group dynamic and help participants connect with peers from diverse backgrounds. Support interpersonal development.

  • Speak in the target language at all times, unless there is a health or safety risk, and use only the target language when talking with participants as well as other Program Leaders and CIEE Center Staff.

  • Encourage and engage participants to stay in the target language outside of class and provide feedback, when appropriate, on their language use.

  • Be a learning bridge by helping participants apply what they learn in class in the community. Facilitate experiential learning outside of the classroom by asking open-ended questions and engaging participants in reflecting on their experiences and observations and making connections.

  • Manage participants’ behavioral and academic issues and provide reports to CIEE staff as needed.

  •  Assist CIEE Center Staff with program logistics, group management and other duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator.

  • Actively participate in all program activities and excursions.

  • Collaborate with co-leaders to publish weekly blog posts for the High School Summer Abroad Blog for the duration of the program.

  • Complete an online training course (10-15 hours for Service & Leadership and Global Discovery, 15-20 hours for Language and Culture) and a three-day (Friday evening to Sunday afternoon) in-person training session May 1st-3rd, 2020.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Manage participants’ behavioral and academic issues and provide reports to CIEE staff as needed.

  • Leaders for Language & Culture programs must be full-time high school world language teachers.

  • Experience working with high school students in a leadership position required.

  • Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree is a plus.

  • Extensive experience in the host country and knowledge of culture, customs, and navigation (please speak to this in your application).

  • Flexibility – a willingness and appreciation for unanticipated changes to your specific responsibilities, program components, and participant support needs.

  • Ability to adapt to logistical changes and challenges while maintaining positivity.

  • Experience creating positive and inclusive group dynamics amongst participants from diverse backgrounds.

  • Passport valid through February 2021. CIEE will cover the cost of visas where necessary but cannot reimburse passport fees.

  • Ability to attend 3-day Program Leader Training in May 1st-3rd, 2020 (all expenses will be covered by CIEE)

  • All Program Leaders who did not lead in summer 2019 are required to complete an online Sexual Harassment training.

  • Authorization to work lawfully in the United States.

  • Due to Federal Regulations, a background check will be conducted as a condition of employment.
