Founded in 1977, the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) at the University of North Texas was one of the first IEPs to receive accreditation from the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). In the IELI’s storied 43-year history, thousands of students have achieved English proficiency for degree study at UNT and other universities both in the U.S. and overseas.
Since 2014, IELI has successfully run an intensive English program for our long-term partner institution, Kansai Gaidai University, in Hirakata, Osaka, Japan. The main purpose of the KGU-UNT Super IES Program is to prepare KGU students in English skills and academic culture for successful study abroad experiences at U.S. universities. For academic assignments and duties, the UNT Program Director in Japan (PDJ) position is under the supervision of the Assistant Dean and Director of the IELI with UNT’s International Affairs. The PDJ also works closely with KGU’s Center for International Education to maintain a positive working relationship and to ensure compliance with host university rules and regulations.
Position Summary
The UNT Program Director in Japan position is a full-time appointment that requires a minimum workweek of forty (40) hours per week to include, but not limited to the following duties:
a. Supervising the implementation of the KGU-UNT Program in the College of International Professional Development (CIPD)
b. Training, supporting, and supervising ESL instructors assigned to the KGU-UNT Program
c. Determining the teaching assignments each semester
d. Conducting evaluations for all ESL instructors assigned to the KGU-UNT Program
e. Developing, revising, implementing and evaluating the curriculum and conducting regular student assessments for the CIPD program courses
f. Teaching classes. Number of classes to be determined by Assistant Dean and Director
g. Assisting the Assistant Dean and Director with monitoring the results of the KGU-UNT Program, including, but not limited to, preparing an annual report for KGU on the results of the program in the College of International Professional Development
h. Leading faculty meetings and curriculum meetings as needed f
i. Organizing professional development activities for faculty
j. Advising students and offering student support services
k. Maintaining records of curriculum, enrollment, and program results
l. Supervising the organization and implementation of extracurricular activities for IELI students at KGU
m. Administrative work before, during and at the end of the semester including, but not limited to the following: place textbook orders, conduct orientation sessions for new students, administer and grade placement tests, place students into sections, keep records according to KGU and IELI policies, produce and distribute mid-term and final grade reports, and other required paperwork and duties
n. Attendance at the opening ceremony in April and departure ceremonies in July and December. Participation in KGU activities such as Open Campus (typically 3 per semester) and study abroad placement tests (typically 1 per semester). Participation in IELI evening, weekend, or lunch time program activities. Participation in KGU holiday parties is expected
o. Participation in meetings scheduled by KGU
Other requirements of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
a. Willingness and ability to work cooperatively and well with other instructors and administrators for the benefit of IELI
b. Willingness and ability to teach a variety of classes as assigned
c. Available for consultation with UNT International Affairs’ administrators during the period of mid-January to mid-March
d. Collaborate with UNT and KGU staff, as needed, and act as a liaison between UNT and KGU administrations
e. Represent UNT International Affairs at some recruitment activities in Japan
f. Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean and Director of IELI
Minimum Qualifications
• Master’s degree in TESOL or closely related field
• Four years of experience teaching English for Academic Purposes at a university-governed IEP
• Three years of successful academic leadership and faculty supervisory experience within an IEP
• Successful experience with supervising, evaluating, and providing leadership for non-tenure track faculty.
• Strong sense of organizational and advocacy skills
• Extensive knowledge of and experience with IEP curriculum, language testing and interpretation, and student advisement
• Successful experience using technology in both remote teaching and in-classroom environments
• Native or near-native speaker of English
• Willingness and ability to relocate to Japan for 3 to 5 years. An on-campus two-bedroom apartment is provided
• Proven ability to adjust to different cultures and work environments including overseas working or living experience
Preferred Qualifications
• Some familiarity with Japanese culture and language
• Knowledge of a second language
