The Asahi Shimbun newspaper seeks a skilled and highly motivated News Assistant

The position is for its New York Bureau. The successful candidate will work closely with a correspondent covering news in North America, including breaking news and political news, while also working with the New York Bureau Chief on long-term research projects and features.

Founded in 1879, The Asahi Shimbun is widely recognized as Japan’s leading and most respected national daily broadsheet. It has a circulation of more than four million copies per day and is read by a wide segment of the Japanese public. The newspaper is particularly influential among Japan’s government officials, policymakers, and academics.  It also reaches an English audience through its English language website. Its North American bureaus are located in Washington D.C., New York, and San Francisco.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree.

Excellent communication and internet research skills and the ability to work independently are required. The candidate should be adept at handling a variety of breaking news stories. Japanese and/or Spanish language skills, and a background in International Affairs and/or American Politics/Society/Culture are a plus but not required.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the US without sponsorship.

Job Description:

Assisting our New York-based correspondent by conducting background research, gathering news and comments, arranging and conducting interviews, and closely following developments in the correspondent’s beat. That said, candidates must be flexible and willing to work with other correspondents on other issues when necessary. Some travel, domestic and international, may be required.

This is a position with very limited article-writing or byline opportunities.

Compensation:

The position has an annual salary range of $38,000 ~ $50,000. Qualifications and former work experience will be considered.

Compensation also includes overtime pay, excellent medical/dental/vision benefits, and commuting expenses.  The position will be available starting immediately.
