Japanese Assistant Professor – St. Olaf College (Northfield, MN)

The Department of Asian Studies at St. Olaf College invites applications for a one-year position in Japanese at the level of Assistant Professor to begin August 2021. Areas of expertise include Japanese linguistics, literature, film, popular culture, or cultural studies.

The successful candidate will teach at least five classes a year (.83 FTE), including four Japanese language courses and one course in the candidate’s discipline taught in English. There is a possibility for a sixth course taking the position to full time.

We look for someone who envisions their contribution to the Japanese major and Asian Studies broadly, such as assisting weekly Japanese conversation tables. Candidates with Ph.D. in hand at the appointment time will be given priority, but those with ABD status may also be considered (at the level of instructor). College-level Japanese language instruction experience and a strong commitment to language teaching to foster students’ proficiency and cross-cultural competencies is preferred. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legally authorized to work in the U.S.

Applicants must submit materials online at https://stolaf.hiretouch.com/faculty-postings.  (Click the label, Japanese Term Faculty 2021-22). A complete application includes:

1.     Cover letter that addresses your qualifications for this position, including your teaching philosophy

2.     Curriculum vitae

3.     Graduate transcript (official or unofficial)

4.     Evidence of teaching excellence (e.g. link to a short video of language instruction, summaries of course evaluations or student feedback, etc.)

5.     The contact information for three professional references who can speak to your abilities in teaching and scholarship

Review of applications will begin on January 15, 2021 and will continue until the position is filled. Applications received by that date will receive the fullest consideration.
