International Student and Scholar Advisor – University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA)

Position Description

The University of Virginia seeks an International Student & Scholar Advisor to support the International Studies Office. The International Studies Office is a University-wide resource dedicated to providing the expertise and infrastructure necessary to bring international students and scholars to UVA and to facilitate education abroad opportunities for all UVA students. The International Student & Scholar Advisor reports to the Director of the International Studies Office (ISO) and works in close collaboration with a team of International Student and Scholar Advisors in support of UVA’s foreign national undergraduate, graduate and professional students and the University’s J-1 scholars.

Responsibilities:
Providing advice and counsel on all issues of importance and concern to international students and scholars, and sharing responsibilities for generating foreign student and scholar data reports from the Student & Exchange Visitor System (SEVIS) real-time interface, and the University’s student information system of record to ensure compliance with Federal and Commonwealth standards and to maintain data integrity.

It is expected that as a team member, the Advisor will help to provide a safe and culturally sensitive environment for students and their dependents to receive counsel relating to personal, academic and immigration issues.
The Advisor is one of the principal liaisons between the University and the Federal Government and will serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and as the Responsible Officer for the University’s J program (RO), once qualified.
The Advisor as RO will Manage incoming exchange programs
The Advisor as RO will provide advice and support to departments seeking to sponsor visiting scholars and be the lead resource for the University’s J-1 program

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree with at least four years of student advising or program coordination experience, or an Advanced degree in relevant subject matter.
U.S. citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residence as required by federal regulations to become a DSO and RO

Preferred Qualifications:
Progressively responsible experience in higher education in international student and scholar support services, including visa and immigration services as DSO and ARO/RO
Ability to provide strategic planning and leadership
Familiarity with Terra Dotta, , Sunapsis, or PeopleSoft.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Knowledge of best practices in international higher education and providing services to international students and scholars

This position will remain open until filled. This is an Exempt level, benefited position. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. Anticipated Hiring Range: $50,000 – $55,000 commensurate with education and experience. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
