International Scholar Engagement Coordinator, University of Colorado Boulder (Boulder, Colorado)
Job Summary
International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) facilitates the entry, success, and retention of approximately 3000 international students and 750 international scholars. ISSS advocates on behalf of international students and scholars both within the university and to federal regulatory agencies to ensure that they are afforded every opportunity to complete their educational, research, and/or professional objectives. ISSS provides educational, social, and cultural programs that foster the integration and success of the international population on campus and in the local community and promote a greater understanding and appreciation for all cultures.
As a member of the ISSS team, in this entry-level position, the International Scholar Engagement Coordinator designs, plans and implements programs and initiatives including off-campus excursions for international scholars including international visiting professors, postdoctoral fellows, short-term visitors, academic and research faculty, and staff. The goal of these efforts is to assist the international scholars and their families (as well as the families of international students) to engage on campus as well as in the local community, by assisting them with academic and career growth as well as social and intercultural integration.
In addition, with direct supervision, the International Scholar Engagement Coordinator provides limited advice to international scholars in regards to immigration, academic, logistical, financial, health, travel, and career development matters. Lastly, this position provides ISSS staff including the Director with administrative support for processes and projects related to international scholars.
Who We Are
International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) seeks to support international students and scholars in pursuing their educational, research, and/or professional objectives at the university through comprehensive advising; engagement and programming; and advocacy efforts.
ISSS collaborates with university departments to support international students and scholars on-campus and assists and supports departments in their pursuit to develop international collaborations and hire top candidates in the field.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Program Management :
- Develop, coordinate, market, and implement programming, events, and initiatives including off-campus excursions for international scholars (visiting professors, postdoctoral fellows, short-term visitors, academic and research faculty, and staff) and families of international students and scholars to cultivate an inclusive community and assist with their integration and success academically, socially, and culturally on campus and in the local community.
- Collaborate with other campus units as well as the Exchange Visitor team in ISSS to create and implement programming that will enhance the scholars’ and the dependents’ experience on campus and in the community in regards to career building, social integration, cultural adjustment, etc.
- Event planning will include budgeting and fiscal accountability; negotiating for time, space, resources, catering, etc.; and marketing to students, staff, and faculty.
- Work with International Student Programs Coordinators in ISSS, develop programs for both international students and scholars when appropriate.
- Provide trainings to assist campus entities with intercultural competency to help international scholars thrive.
- Develop and maintain relationships with various unit representatives on campus integral to the international scholars’ success such as but not limited to the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, Postdoctoral Association of Colorado, Research & Innovation Office, Office of Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement, Faculty & Staff Assistance Program, Housing & Dining Services, etc.
Assistance with Advising, Visa Document Preparation, & Reporting:
- With direct oversight from the Assistant Director, International Student & Scholar Engagement and with advice from International Student & Scholar advisors in ISSS, provide limited advice to international scholars (including short-term visitors, postdoctoral fellows, academic and research faculty, and staff) in regards to immigration, academic, logistical, financial, health, travel, and career development matters.
- Assist scholars in adjusting to life at the university and in the U.S. including advising on campus academic and personal support resources, clubs and organizations on campus, on and off campus employment, applications for Social Security Numbers, state driver’s licenses, etc.
- Assist in the monitoring, reporting, and submission of required information and documentation to federal governmental agencies.
- Prepare appropriate employment-based visa and permanent residency applications to federal government agencies on behalf of the university.
Administrative Assistance to ISSS Team:
- Provide ISSS staff including Director with administrative support for processes and projects related to international scholars, including but not limited to, scanning and indexing, making copies, filing, room and meeting scheduling, taking minutes at meetings, email notifications, data entry, mailing and shipments, and other various administrative tasks.
Other Miscellaneous Duties:
- Assist with projects within the ISSS office to enhance efficiency and customer service, e.g. website revisions, development of internal processes and communications such as handouts and forms, creating and giving presentations to campus community, social media updates, etc. Participate in weekly case management meetings, ISSS team meetings, new international student orientation, etc.
- Engage in professional development and compliance training opportunities.
- Train, mentor, assign work and supervise student worker(s).
- Other duties as assigned.
What You Should Know
- Programming will involve additional hours on evenings and weekends outside the required 40 hours of work per week. Given that this is an exempt position under the FLSA, compensatory pay will not be awarded. Any administrative leave/time off is discretionary for hours worked over 40 hours per work week.
