The Department of Linguistics and Germanic, Slavic, Asian, and African Languages at Michigan State University is seeking a full-time instructor or assistant professor of Japanese language. This is a fixed-term, nine-month, academic year position beginning August 16, 2019, and is renewable contingent upon funding and performance.
Rank is determined by highest degree; with a Master’s degree required for an instructor position; and a PhD required for an assistant professor position. All degrees must be confirmed by degree-granting institution at the time of hire.
•M.A. or a higher degree in Japanese language pedagogy, linguistics, foreign language teaching, or related field;
•One-year experience in teaching college students in a classroom setting in North America;
•Training in proficiency-oriented language instruction;
•Native or near-native proficiency in both Japanese and English; and
•Basic instructional technology skills, such as use of a course management system.
Experience in teaching intermediate (third-year) Japanese using the textbook Tobira, and teaching (or at least familiarity) with the textbooks Genki I & II.
Duties will include teaching Japanese language courses (most likely in charge of Third-year Japanese, and team teach First-year Japanese), sharing extracurricular responsibilities with other faculty, participating in curriculum and program development and, possibly, supervising graduate assistants.
