Deputy Director – Asia Program (Washington, DC)
Department/Program Summary:
Through high-level conferences, small workshops, and research, GMF’s Asia Program aims to develop common U.S.-European approaches to challenges emanating from Asia. It also works to build closer U.S.-Europe-Asia partnerships to strengthen the liberal international order at a time when it is increasingly contested. The program’s signature event is the twice annual Stockholm China Forum but similar programming is conducted with friends in India, Japan, and Taiwan.
Job Summary:
The Deputy Director will play a key management role for the Asia program, including supervising and managing program/research officers and assistants in three cities, and overseeing substantive coordination across the team at all levels, including Senior Fellows, Resident Fellows, and Visiting Fellows. The Deputy works closely with the Director to oversee and coordinate strategic development and implementation of all aspects of the Asia program’s work, including its policy and research agendas, development of partnerships with outside organizations, and engagement with U.S. and foreign government and non-government officials. Ensuring that the program’s work aligns with and supports its strategic priorities, including by balancing convening and original research, are a critical function of this role.
The Deputy will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day work of the Asia Program’s team, to include program operations, and will be the primary liaison to the program’s staff in both Brussels and Berlin. The Deputy will represent the program at public events, speaking engagements, media availabilities, and other meetings as needed. S/he will lead the development and implementation of the program’s domestic outreach efforts, and will travel domestically and internationally to events and meetings, including fundraising events, at the request of the Director. The Deputy Director will engage current U.S. and foreign government policymakers and will assist with fundraising and ongoing engagements with donors as needed.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Oversee the day-to-day work of the Asia program’s team, to include program operations.
Supervise and manage program/research officers and assistants, and oversee substantive coordination across the team among Senior Fellows, Resident Fellows, and Visiting Fellows.

Lead development and implementation of the domestic outreach component of the Asia program’s work
Author and contribute to blog posts, op-eds and other research and policy papers, and help edit the program’s products.
Travel domestically and internationally to events and meetings, including fundraising events.
