The Department of Linguistics and Germanic, Slavic, Asian and African Languages at Michigan State University is seeking a Japanese Language instructor. A Master’s degree is required for this position. This is a part-time fixed-term position for Fall 2020 and may be renewed for subsequent Fall terms, pending funding and Program needs.
The successful candidate will contribute to diversity and inclusive excellence at MSU through teaching one course (equivalent to 5-6 contact hours/week) in the Japanese Studies Program.
Duties include teaching JPN 101 as a member of the first-year Japanese faculty team or potentially another course pending Program needs. The instructor will work in consultation with the coordinator of the Japanese Language Program. For information about the Japanese program, please visit http://linglang.msu.edu/

Required Degree
Masters
Minimum Requirements
- M.A. or a higher degree in Japanese language pedagogy, linguistics, foreign language teaching, or other related field;
- Two to three years experience teaching college students in a classroom setting in North America;
- Experience using Japanese Language textbooks, such as Genki I & II and Tobira, as well as authentic materials for all levels;
- Training in proficiency-oriented language instruction;
- Native or near-native proficiency in both Japanese and English;
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness (quantitative and sample of qualitative data from teaching evaluations);
- Basic instructional technology skills, including navigating through course management systems such as D2L, Blackboard, as well as Qualtrics.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience teaching Japanese at all levels from elementary through advanced;
- Experience with ACTFL proficiency standards and proficiency-based approaches to teaching Japanese;
- OPI certification;
- Demonstrated proficiency in online teaching and/or appropriate technologies in language instruction;
- Event planning experience.
