Monday WFH blues got you down? Not being productive anyway? Just need a place to eat lunch? Take a break at the JETAASC Water Cooler! This is a casual drop-in type hang out where you can say hi, stick around for some lunchtime conversation, or just tune in to some ambient social interaction we’ve all been missing away from the office. Bring your favorite drink or a full meal, pop in for a few minutes or a few hours. We’re looking to make this a weekly event to start your week off right.

There was so much interest in our webinar on careers using Japanese that we will be holding a networking session for those interested in pursuing a career using Japanese. We’re back for another JETAA Mothra Storyteller hour open to all JETS and Friends of JET! Join us as we swap stories and amazing memories from our time on the JET Program. Whether it’s been a year, a decade, or longer since you’ve been to Japan, come relive those only-in-Japan moments with your JETAA friends! This will be an informal event with different speakers sharing short, 5-min stories of their most memorable experiences on JET.

- This event is casual – hop on and hop off whenever you want
- We are seeking at least 6 speakers to share their stories – see Speaker Details below
- We currently plan to have 6, 5-minute stories, separated by 10 minutes for “intermission” and casual conversation. This is subject to modification depending on the number of speaker volunteers we receive.
- Bring your favorite beverage – we’ll have a casual Kampai at 7:00 (but you can drink before 7:00!)
- Video call details will be shared shortly before the start of the event

Was it that treacherous trek up Mt Fuji? Or when you got too close to those “cute” monkeys for a selfie? What about the questionable sushi you picked up from the convenience store that one time? We’ll relive the moments that made us laugh, cry, cringe, and form a very special bond with our home-away-from-home.

September 11, 2020 at 7 PM EDT – New England JETAA Make it おしゃれ (Fancy) Cooking Challenge
Your challenge is to make a fancy dish using ramen noodles, snap a beautiful photo of it, and then post it to the Facebook group by the end of September 8th (one week)! Don’t forget to tag it #makeitoshare to enter!
We will all vote on which we think is the fanciest via Facebook likes. Friday, September 11th, at 7:00 PM EST we all share recipes (and maybe even re-make and eat our creations) in a Zoom call (the link will be sent to those who RSVP to the Facebook event, or email one of us board members)

Details: Summer is coming to a close but that doesn’t mean you have to put away the grill just yet! On Thursday, 9/10 from 6:30-7:30 PM CST, join members of JETAA Chicago and the Young Professionals Committee (YPC) of the Japan America Society of Chicago for a “last roast” to summer. Jerry Lai, host of the YouTube Channel Chicago Griller, will teach attendees how to make tsukune (chicken skewers) and yaki onigiri (grilled rice balls). No grill? No problem! You can also make these dishes on a skillet. This event is free and open to all JET Alumni, Friends of JET, and members of the YPC Japan America Society of Chicago. Are you ready for another night of competition, laughter, and general tomfoolery? We’re back at it again with another edition of Jackbox games for your Saturday night amusement.
Grab a drink and some snacks and plant yourself in front of your computer screen (plus a needed smartphone) and play along with us! Games begin at 8:00 PM and a link to the Google Meets room will be created on the day of the event and posted on Facebook.

Details: The JETAANY Philadelphia sub-chapter will be hosting a Socially Distanced Japanese Bento Picnic Day! We plan to take out lunch bento boxes from a local Japanese restaurant and walk to a local park to get to know each other, discuss JET experiences, and play a Trivia Game about Japan.

September 20-26, 2020: Pacific Northwest JETAA and USJETAA Transitions Career Forum

Transitions: Opportunities Forum & Networking Expo is the annual career and networking event organized by the Pacific Northwest JET Alumni Association (PNWJETAA). This year, the event is co-hosted by the U.S. JET Programme Alumni Association (USJETAA) to expand Transitions beyond the Pacific Northwest and welcome alumni from other chapters. The event is co-sponsored by The Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR) and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA (Sasakawa USA).
Transitions is one of PNWJETAA’s biggest events and draws from the experiences of hundreds of JET alumni and members of our community. Whether you are a new returnee or you’ve been back for a few years, it’s our goal to help you explore your options and plan your next steps, regardless of the path you choose to pursue!
While this event is specifically for JET alumni, it’s open to anyone who wishes to attend. As a JET Alumni-produced event, it provides the unique opportunity for individuals who wish to learn more about the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program or organizations doing work related to the Japan-America community.

Career counseling applications are open from September 1st to 8th. Register for Transitions and apply by September 8th to be considered for a session. Selected participants will be notified via email on September 11th and will have until September 16th to schedule their session. All sessions will be held between September 20th and 26th.
In addition, Emily Frank will be offering a free course titled “The Career Quick Start” to registrants. So make sure to register!

On Wednesday, September 23 at 8:00PM CST Yuki Miyamoto, an Associate Professor of Religious Studies & Global Asian Studies at DePaul University, Tom Le, an Assistant Professor of Politics at Pomona College, and Saira Chambers, Director of the Japanese Arts Foundation, will be joined by Koko Kondo, a peace activist and survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bombing, as they offer their perspectives on why we should care now.

Details: This is the inaugural session for our new Surviving in Japan series, which is specifically for addressing key topics and issues for JETlings (new JETs) as they prepare for their journey to Japan. Our first session will discuss the nuances of driving in Japan.
