 JETAANY 30th Anniversary Photo Contest – Accepting entries through October 6/ Voting October 6 to October 23

JETAANY is hosting a photo contest as part of our chapter’s 30th anniversary! We are opening this contest to all JETAANY members, regardless of when you went on JET. Doesn’t matter if you were in Japan in 1989, 2006 or are still there! We want to help our alumni to help share their best memories and photos of Japan throughout the long history of the JET Program

2020 has been a turbulent year, and with travel restricted, many of us have been looking through old photos of our lives in Japan on the JET Programme. Now’s the time to put them to good use and help celebrate 30 years of JETAANY! Please submit entries here:

Take a break at the JETAASC Water Cooler! This is a casual drop-in type hang out where you can say hi, stick around for some lunchtime conversation, or just tune in to some ambient social interaction we’ve all been missing away from the office. Bring your favorite drink or a full meal, pop in for a few minutes or a few hours. We’re looking to make this a weekly event to start your week off right.

October 3, 2020 at 7:00 PM ET – JETAADC Sake Experience

While you were on JET, did you have the opportunity to learn about and appreciate sake? Have you had the chance to try good sake since you’ve been back in the DC region? Do you miss the opportunity to share and reminisce about Japanese culture with your fellow JETs? Thanks to DC local and Friend of JET, Reiko Hirai, and her DC Sake co, we have the opportunity to learn more about the history and production techniques of Sake from Sake specialist Chizuko Niikawa, Founder of Sake Discoveries in NYC, Certified sake sommelier, and Sake Samurai who is certified as an expert by the Japan Sake Brewers Association. Due to COVID-19, this will be a virtual event hosted through Zoom on Saturday, October 3rd at 7 pm. As a special treat, Chizuko Sensei will also guide us on a tasting of a sake that’s never previously been available in DC! Participants will be able to purchase sake tasting sets to sample during the presentation through the DC Sake Co. [Link will be provided to those who sign up].  Please note that we will set up a time for you to pick up the Sake in Washington, DC the before the event. Purchase of sake is NOT required to participate in this event.

Saturday, October 17, 2020, we’d like to get together online*, watch, and discuss “One Cut of the Dead” aka “Kamera wo Tomeru na!” – a light-hearted Japanese zombie movie about family and the importance of teamwork. Every word of that description was true. I promise.

Viewing: 7pm Central Time. Discussion will start after the film concludes at around 8:45 pm Central Time. This time – you’ll need to acquire/rent the film independently. Currently, there appear to be two options to do so: (1) Free: go to Amazon – you can rent for free via a 7-day trial of “Shudder”, a horror streaming service; or (2) $4-$5: YouTube – currently you can rent the film for $4-$5.

Look no further!

Join us on Sunday, October 18th as Amanda Ouymiya, our expert judge from the Kyaraben Contest, shows us how to make a simple bento using on-hand ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen. She’ll clue us in on the basics and secrets of putting together a good bento, and, when the bento is complete, we’ll end with a Q&A session where everyone can ask her all their bento-related questions.

Our October JET Talk invites a special guest to be our presenter, Calligraphy Instructor Hiromi Peterson (Toka). She is a Calligraphy Instructor at Punahou School and JCCH with Kanji Calligraphy 8th dan and Kana Calligraphy 7th dan. She is also the calligraphy mentor to our own Co-Media Coordinator Taylor Date. Come learn about Peterson-sensei and how she uses calligraphy in her daily routine. If you want to pick up a new hobby for quarantine time or just learn more about the art of calligraphy this is the perfect start for you!

Peterson-sensei will be demonstrating calligraphy techniques during this talk. If you would like to learn calligraphy with her, but don’t have materials we are offering some calligraphy packages to mail directly to you!

Please join USJETAA and US Embassy Tokyo for an information session on the 2020 Microgrant Initiative for American JETs. This session will give you the basic information on applying to the program and answer any your questions.

The Microgrant Initiative for American JETs is funded by the U.S. Embassy Tokyo. This program provides small grants to JET participants working in Japan on the JET Programme to fund projects that introduce American culture and English language to students in their classrooms and to the local community.

Not a horror film. Despite the title, this is a comedic rock musical!

This is the story of when Brad and Janet, a straight-laced couple, get a flat tire in front of a castle full of interesting characters. It is considered a cult classic, and is reguarly watched by many during the Halloween season and beyond.

You must have a Hulu account to participate (there is a free trial) and the Teleparty (formerly known as Netflix Party) browser extension. A link to the Teleparty will be provided on our Facebook (or emailed to those who request it) at 7:45 p.m. and viewing will start at about 8:00.

Etiquette is everything in Japan, especially when you are drinking with your bosses and co-workers! JETAA Hawaii invites you to bring your dinner and a drink to our Virtual ZOOM Enkai (office party) and learn how to bond with your fellow co-workers for a harmonious work environment. To make this event more realistic in the time of COVID-19, JETAA Hawaii is offering a $10 rebate for anyone ordering takeout food from a Japanese restaurant for dinner! (NOT for alcohol) A list of approved Japanese restaurants and more instructions on how to get the rebate will be emailed to you after you RSVP. If there is a Japanese restaurant in your area that is not on our list, you can suggest it in the Google Form below by 10/17. Pending approval from the JETAA Board, you may be able to get the $10 rebate for the suggested restaurant.

This event is mainly to benefit the 2020 New JETs, but alumni are welcome to come and provide feedback about their personal experiences as well! JETAA Board members will present on the dos and don’ts of etiquette and open it up to a Q&A.

 


October 24, 2020 at 10AM ET – JETAASC Fall Career Fair 

We’re excited to announce our Annual JETAASC Fall Career Fair this year! This event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24th from 10 am – 2 pm. Since we continue to be under the Safer at Home mandate, we will be hosting this popular event virtually.

We’re currently looking for JET Alumni who are interested in sharing their expertise and knowledge of their respective industries with our fellow JETAASC members during our Career Fair. Speakers will be given a 30-minute session from 10 am – 12 pm and have an opportunity to interact and network with fellow JET Alumni during our virtual networking lunch.

Walk/Run Fall Fundraiser (JETAANY)

Time: Anytime all weekend!
Details: To celebrate Japanese American community connections and their history in New York, come join JAA’s fall fundraising walk/run anytime over the weekend of October 24 to 25. This is a virtual event, in support of JAA, the Japanese American Association of New York, a nonprofit that builds community ties between Japanese, Japanese Americans and those who love Japanese culture. It is also in commemoration of the 160th anniversary of Japan-New York relations. In 1860, the first Japanese delegation, in samurai gear, was welcomed to New York with a parade in lower Manhattan.

Join USJETAA and TABLE FOR TWO for an #Onigiri Action 2020 virtual event. TABLE FOR TWO (TFT), a global nonprofit with roots in Japan, is again sponsoring its #OnigiriAction Campaign. Join us for a family-friendly event where we will make, decorate, and eat rice balls, and then post pictures of the onigiri. Each onigiri photo post brings 5 school meals to children in need.

Are you feeling stressed out? Is your anxiety level higher than usual? Does March and life before coronavirus feel like a lifetime ago?
Come join us for an illuminating lecture and discussion with Dr. Scott Haas on ukeireru, the Japanese concept of acceptance and how it can be applied to improve our daily lives.
Through his experiences working and living in Japan, Dr. Haas has observed how Japanese people use acceptance and empathy to live more happily and manage the stresses of everyday life. By embracing and practicing ukeireru, Dr. Haas offers his insight on a new way of life to reduce anxiety and stress and increase overall well-being.
