Monday WFH blues got you down? Not being productive anyway? Just need a place to eat lunch? Take a break at the JETAASC Water Cooler! This is a casual drop-in type hang out where you can say hi, stick around for some lunchtime conversation, or just tune in to some ambient social interaction we’ve all been missing away from the office. Bring your favorite drink or a full meal, pop in for a few minutes or a few hours. We’re looking to make this a weekly event to start your week off right.

We recently discovered Watch2together, a website that allows you to watch videos from all over the internet at the same time as everyone in your group. Mix that with zoom and Youtube, and you get: virtual karaoke with an unlimited song index! If you can find a video of it, you can sing it– no more searching for your favorite songs only to find ‘no results’.

So join us on November 7th to sing the night away with your favorite songs!

Please have a pair of earbuds, earphones, or a headset for an optimal karaoke experience. (Feedback loops are no fun!)

Event Description :

Jan Kennedy, Associate Professor of Art History at the Kansas City Art Institute, will talk about the layers of associations and meanings embedded in Japanese prints from the Edo period
(1603-1868).
While prints of this period clearly reference aspects of the “Floating World” such as Kabuki actors and courtesans, eventually expanding to include subjects such as landscapes and folklore, these images may have deeper meanings.
Is a print of two women playing music merely representing an intimate pastime? Does the print of a Kabuki actor in a performance simply depict that memorable event and nothing more?
When are ukiyo-e artists communicating something beyond the visual imagery – or hidden within it – that those in the Edo period would have understood? This presentation will explore some underlying meanings and associations of Japanese prints as well as the creative strategies used by artists to enrich the experiences of the imagery.

How will the event work?

After your registration is confirmed, you will be shipped various samples of different kinds of Japanese tea, hand-packed with love from one of your NEJETAA board members. We will then all gather in Zoom where we will have a short presentation on Japanese tea and tea-drinking culture. Finally, you will be taught how to brew each type of tea and then we will enjoy them together.

NEJETAA is covering the cost of the tea, but we ask that participants help cover the cost of shipping. Therefore we ask for a $2 contribution to finalize your registration.

This is event is first-come-first-served, and registration space is limited. We will accept registration up to one week before the event (November 6th), but please understand that your tea may not arrive in time if you sign up close to that deadline. We may accept registration after the deadline on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us if you want to register after November 6th.

JETAASC is proud to host its first virtual video game night during the pandemic. Let’s play Among Us!

Among Us is a social deduction game where crewmates navigate a spaceship to complete tasks while avoiding getting killed off by an impostor(s) who is posing as a crewmate. It is currently the most streamed game on Twitch and has taken the internet gaming culture by storm.

The game does not require hard gaming skills; as long as you can follow a map, complete simple tasks, and defend your innocence, you can play!

Depending on number of sign ups we will play in Zoom breakout rooms.

Christmas is around the corner, and what better gift to give someone than Japanese inspired 3D printed jewelry? JETAAMN is offering a one day class on how to use free software to create meaningful art based on Japanese crests. Class is designed as an introductory lesson, so beginners are welcome!

You’ve seen Iron Chef. You’ve wished you could be on The Great British Bake-Off. Now JETAA Hawaii brings to your kitchen: The Great JETAA Cook-Off!!! We call upon our JETAA members to show us their great cooking skills in a competition for amazing awards and prizes. We have chosen a special Fall/Winter ingredient which you must use to make a spectacular dish. That special ingredient is ….. KABOCHA! 😀 Subsidized by JETAA Hawaii, we will have kabocha for you to pick up OR we can reimburse you for your kabocha purchase if you send us the original receipt (More information will be sent via email).

You will have until 1 hour before the JET Talk to make your dish and send a photo of it to JETAA Hawaii (Email or Facebook Messenger). During the JET Talk, we will have a tutorial on Kabocha cooking tricks by our resident chef Kelly Bolen! Learn some new cooking techniques and show off your creation! After the tutorial, you will present your dish with the pictures you sent and the rest will vote for the best of our 5 categories:

Wondering how to upskill during the pandemic? Not sure which online courses are worth pursuing? Join us for an evening of discussing ways to boost your resume in preparation for when the job market bounces back. Learn about which online courses and platforms to harness for maximum professional growth and impact. Also gain an understanding of when paid courses may be the better option and which ones to take advantage of. If you’re a recent JET returnee, this is an especially excellent opportunity to get recommendations, ask for advice, and exchange ideas.

Amelia Hagen (Fukuoka, 2008-2013) graduated from The College of William and Mary and was an ALT in Kitakyushu City from 2008 to 2013. She has 15 years of experience organizing and executing educational initiatives, events, and programs promoting youth diplomacy, leadership, and entrepreneurship. Following her time on JET, Amelia earned an MSc and MBA, while working across the UK, Italy, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan. In between, Amelia has collaborated with the US Department of State, UNDP, TEDx, the American Chamber of Commerce in Kyrgyzstan, the British Council, OSCE, etc. Her energy is now channeled around AmeriCorps Covid-19 relief work, teaching an online business ethics course, reading UC Berkeley international applications, and business development work for a Swiss hospitality school.

The JETAADC Mentorship Program announces its JETAADC’s Mentor Talks, a virtual speaker series focused on career development for JET alumni interested in U.S.-Japan relations. This series is sponsored by the U.S. JET Program Alumni Association (USJETAA) and Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA (Sasakawa USA). Join us on Tuesday, November 17th at 7 PM for our first “Mentor Talks’ session! Our panelists will share their personal and professional journeys in U.S.-Japan relations, and offer advice on career development strategies for JETs in the Washington DC metro area. This session is great for JETs pursuing careers in non-profit, government and international education and exchange. Most importantly, we’ll discuss how JETs can stay involved in U.S.-Japan relations regardless of their careers.
