This is a casual drop-in type hang out where you can say hi, stick around for some lunchtime conversation, or just tune in to some ambient social interaction we’ve all been missing away from the office. Bring your favorite drink or a full meal, pop in for a few minutes or an hour. We’re continuing to make this a weekly event to start your week off right.

Every Wednesday at 8 we’ll be hosting a watch party! See the posts for specific details on what is currently being viewed, and how to join. We hope to see you there!

We will still use teleparty due to size limitations on Hulu’s watch party service. Please remember that the teleparty app will need to be installed into your browser ahead of time and can be found at netflixparty.com ! In addition, you will need an account with Hulu to be able to join.

The first watch party link will be posted at 8 and the video will begin playing at 8:30. We will watch four episodes per week so if you miss this week, you can always watch them in your own time before next week!

We did it, everyone! We made it out of 2020! Come celebrate the start of 2021 with JETAA Hawaii as we host our annual Bo-Shin-Nen-Kai (Forget the Last Year and Welcome the Next! Review Party) Let’s reconnect with old friends and make some new ones. Be our guest at our Zoom feast as we take a look back on JETAA Hawaii’s accomplishments over the year, unveil our chapter’s hopes for this coming year, and partake in a night of revelry and prizes!

To thank you for joining our event, JETAA Hawaii is offering a $15 rebate to anyone ordering takeout food from a Japanese restaurant for dinner! (Alcohol, tax, and tip not included in rebate.) We will pay both the $15 rebate and any postage used to mail the original, itemized receipt. A list of approved Japanese restaurants is included here and will also be emailed to you after you RSVP.

Here’s to a Happier New Year! Let’s start things off with Hiroko Oyamada’s short (128 pages) Kafka-esque English-language debut THE FACTORY, which The New York Times calls “strangely chilling.”

While we usually meet in person over pizza, we’ll be gathering virtually for the time being. Feel free to eat and drink during the meeting. Joining late is OK, too!

The JETAA Pacific Book Club is set to launch in January of 2021! Before we kick it off, we’d like to have some input from our inaugural members. Please tell us more about what and how you like to read. Our first book club meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 24, 2021, 2pmHST/3pmAKDT/4pmPDT and will last one hour. We are planning to announce the first book in the beginning of January to allow everyone time to read. Our first meeting will also include time for introductions and going over the format of the group.

Join Dr. Mya Fisher (JET in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa, 2000-2002) from Global Equity Forward for a 90-minute training on “Racial and Social Justice in Cross-Cultural Contexts: Meaning and Action in the U.S.-Japan Community.” The session will use presentations and interactive breakouts to examine the challenges presented by the way Japan and the U.S. understand terms like diversity, racial and social justice. Discussions will focus on how these issues impact organizations and members of the U.S.-Japan community. Participants will learn how to create safe spaces and foster community to address these issues. Be prepared to have your camera on and discuss your personal experiences. This event is hosted by USJETAA in collaboration with CULCON and the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission.

Thanks to generous support from the Sasakawa USA/USJETAA Mini-Grant Program, JETAA Chicago is pleased to announce the first of two webinars in our series, J-Talks, centered around the themes of identity, cultural understanding and leadership, as experienced by JET alumni and individuals with meaningful connections to Japan.

For our first webinar, on Thursday, January 28th from 7-8:30 PM CST, we will focus on the hidden roots of Chicago’s Japanese community and the role of the Midwest in bridging US-Japan relations. We will be joined by three speakers from across the Midwest who will lead interactive discussions and answer audience questions.

Friday, January 29! All virtual events are FREE!We’ll have JETAANY chefs going live on our Facebook page, sharing some of their favorite recipes, as well as a talk by author Scott Haas (via Zoom). On Friday, we invite everyone to come together virtually for a Kanpai, social gathering, and games (via Zoom).

All virtual events are free, but if you want to enhance your Shinnenkai experience, we will mail you a swag bag for $15. The package will include JETAANY-branded goodies: reusable utensils (a set of chopsticks, a spoon, and a fork), a reusable grocery tote, a face mask, and recipes from all of the virtual cooking events. Swag bags are limited to the first 100 people, and the deadline to register is midnight on Sunday, January 17. **Swag bags for JETAANY members only**

Details: Let’s kick-off 2021 together…virtually! We will have a guest “bartender” shaking up some yummy cocktails and showing us how to use sake and shochu in unique ways. Our chefs will be recapping their live cooking events that happened throughout the week and answering any follow up questions. We will later have breakout rooms to play various games and catch up with friends.

GLJETAA is hosting a virtual career fair for candidates who understand the Japanese culture or the Japanese language. Job seekers will have the opportunity to attend workshops, ask recruiters questions and submit their resumés to select companies. Business casual attire is highly recommended.

JETAASE invites our JET alumni to attend the Shinnenkai & Annual Planning Meeting for 2021! We will be discussing future goals and plans for our chapter. We will also be discussing upcoming board nominations and elections. If you are interested in being on the board, planning events, or just want to meet other Southeast JETs, please come!
